UNICAM is responsible of the CREW Observatory on the coastal wetlands areas

On Thruesday 25th July 2019 the first “Wetland contract on Sentina reserve” workshop was held at the UNICAM seat located in San Benedetto del Tronto and organized by the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, as manager of the reserve and partner of the “CREW_Wetland management in Italy-Croatia cross border region” funded by the CBC Programme 2014 - 2020 Interreg V-A Italy – Croatia. The event was necessary to start the development and the signature process of the river contract on Sentina reserve.

The overall object of the CREW project is to implement a transnational coordination to manage coastal wetland ecosystems, in order to protect their biodiversity and to guarantee a sustainable tourism and economy within the target areas.

Diverse stakeholders participated in the meeting: representatives of the Marche Region, Municipality of Ascoli Piceno, Province of Teramo, Forest and Porth Management Authorities, Water Management Agencies (Distretto Appennino centrale, ATO5, CIIP spa, ARPAM), University of Urbino, local primary schools and associations, such as Gruppo Ecologico Volontario of Protezione Civile.

The numerous presentations were focused on the relevance of the wetlands located in Sentina reserve, and so on the importance of the project implementation through the next steps, in order to raise the project aims and thus to promote the valorization of the coastal natural heritage.

The project was introduced by a representative of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, the Director of the European service, Sentina natural regional reserve, Urban and Enviromental protection service, Sergio Trevisani. Consequently, the Professor Andrea Catorci of UNICAM, as scientific responsible coordinator of the project, and in particular of the creation of the Observatory on the Italian and Croatian wetlands, described the role of the Observatory technical work team.

Indeed, the architect Massimo Bastiani and the Professor Riccardo Santolini of the University of Urbino, illustrated the function of the River contract, as juridic base protocol for the environmental ri-generation of drainage basins, for the creation of the wetland contract on Sentina reserve and of the River contract of Marecchia.

The next meeting will be held in Semptember and represent a further step for the creation of the wetland contract, which will be finalized by 2020. The event will be an opportunity to discuss on the protection of the coastal wetland ecosystems and on the setting of the CREWwiki and WebGIS databases, which will be implemented in order to extend the project actions at European level with the support of data collected by Croatian partners.
